Under manager Daniel Passarella, the team progressed from their group, winning all three matches without conceding a goal. Argentina then advanced to the Round of 16, where they overcame England in a penalty shootout. Their tournament run concluded in the quarter-finals after a defeat to the Netherlands. Marcelo Bielsa took over as manager later in 1998.
Key Players
The squad featured prominent players such as prolific striker Gabriel Batistuta, creative midfielder Ariel Ortega, and influential playmaker Juan Sebastián Verón. Midfield general Diego Simeone and versatile defender Javier Zanetti were also key figures for the national team during this era.
