The 2000-01 season saw AC Milan finish 6th in Serie A with 49 points, which secured their qualification for the UEFA Cup. They were eliminated in the second group stage of the UEFA Champions League and reached the Coppa Italia semi-finals. The 2001-02 season marked an improvement, with the club finishing 4th in Serie A with 55 points, earning qualification for the 2002-03 UEFA Champions League. During this season, Milan also reached the semi-finals of both the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup.
