Season Overview

Australia competed in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, reaching the Round of 16 where they were eliminated by eventual champions Italy. Guus Hiddink managed the team during this historic campaign. In 2007, Australia made their debut in the AFC Asian Cup under coach Graham Arnold, reaching the quarter-finals before losing to Japan on penalties. Pim Verbeek then took over as manager in December 2007, leading the team into 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Key Players

The squad featured a "golden generation" of players, including captain Mark Viduka, Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell, and Mark Schwarzer. Lucas Neill was a prominent defender, and John Aloisi scored crucial goals. Many of these players, such as Viduka, Cahill, Kewell, Schwarzer, and Neill, were also part of the 2007 AFC Asian Cup squad.
