Season Overview
The Belgium national football team participated in the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan, having qualified after winning a play-off against the Czech Republic. Under manager Robert Waseige, the Red Devils advanced to the Round of 16 in the tournament. Following the World Cup, Aimé Anthuenis took over as manager for the UEFA Euro 2004 qualifiers. Belgium finished third in their qualifying group, missing out on the play-offs for the tournament.
Key Players
Notable players during this era included captain Marc Wilmots, who was a key figure in the 2002 World Cup squad and scored in the qualifiers. Forward Wesley Sonck was a prominent goalscorer, including in the Euro 2004 qualifiers. Midfielder Bart Goor and defender Daniel Van Buyten were also important members of the squad.
