Season Overview
The 1997-98 season saw Birmingham City compete in Division One, the second tier of the English football league system, under the management of Trevor Francis. The team finished in seventh position out of 24 teams with 74 points, narrowly missing out on the playoff places on goals scored. A crucial moment came in their final league game at home to Charlton Athletic, where a goalless draw prevented them from securing a playoff spot. In cup competitions, Birmingham City reached the Fifth Round of the FA Cup before being eliminated by Leeds United. They also made it to the Third Round of the League Cup, where they were knocked out by Arsenal.
Key Players
The squad featured several notable players, including striker Paul Furlong, who was the team's top goalscorer with 15 league goals and 19 in all competitions. Other key figures included Zimbabwean forward Peter Ndlovu, experienced defender Steve Bruce, and goalkeeper Ian Bennett. Midfielder Paul Devlin and forward Dele Adebola also played significant roles throughout the campaign.
