Season Overview
The 1990-91 season saw Cagliari compete in Serie A under manager Claudio Ranieri, finishing 14th with 29 points and successfully avoiding relegation. The team showed significant improvement in the second half of the season, collecting 19 points after only managing 10 in the first half. In the Coppa Italia, Cagliari was eliminated in the Second Round by Lecce, losing 4-0 away and 1-0 at home. For the 1991-92 season, Cagliari again competed in Serie A, finishing 13th with 29 points. The season began with Massimo Giacomini as manager, who was replaced by Carlo Mazzone in October 1991. Their Coppa Italia campaign in 1991-92 ended in the First Round after a 0-1 home defeat to Como.
Key Players
During this period, Cagliari featured a strong contingent of South American talent, including Uruguayan stars Enzo Francescoli, Daniel Fonseca, and José Herrera. Midfield general Gianfranco Matteoli was also a crucial player, making 34 appearances in the 1990-91 Serie A season. Other notable contributors included Massimiliano Cappioli and Nicolò Napoli.
