Season Overview
The 1995-96 season saw Celtic, under manager Tommy Burns, finish second in the Scottish Premier Division, just four points behind champions Rangers. Despite losing only one league game all season, they drew eleven matches. In cup competitions, Celtic reached the Scottish Cup semi-finals and the League Cup quarter-finals, being eliminated by Rangers in both. They also competed in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, reaching the second round before being knocked out by eventual winners Paris Saint-Germain. The following 1996-97 season, Celtic again finished second in the Scottish Premier Division, five points adrift of Rangers, who secured their ninth consecutive league title. Tommy Burns was sacked after losing the Scottish Cup semi-final to Falkirk, with Billy Stark taking over as caretaker manager for the remainder of the season. Celtic also exited the Scottish League Cup in the quarter-finals.
