Season Overview

Under manager Billy McNeill, Celtic endured a difficult couple of seasons. In the 1989-90 campaign, they finished a disappointing fifth in the Scottish Premier Division and were runners-up in the Scottish Cup, losing to Aberdeen in the final after a penalty shoot-out. The following 1990-91 season saw an improvement to a third-place league finish, but they lost the League Cup final to Rangers and were knocked out of the Scottish Cup in the semi-finals, resulting in McNeill's dismissal.

Throughout the 1989-91 period, the Celtic squad featured club legends like Paul McStay and Roy Aitken. Key players also included goalkeeper Pat Bonner, defenders Paul Elliott and Anton Rogan, and forwards such as Tommy Coyne, Andy Walker, and the Polish international Dariusz Dziekanowski.
