Season Overview
The 2006-07 season saw Chelsea, under manager José Mourinho, achieve a domestic cup double, winning both the FA Cup and the League Cup. They finished second in the Premier League with 83 points, seven points behind champions Manchester United. Chelsea lifted the FA Cup for the sixth time by defeating Manchester United 1-0 in extra time at the newly rebuilt Wembley Stadium, with Didier Drogba scoring the decisive goal. Earlier in the season, they secured the League Cup (Carling Cup) by beating Arsenal 2-1 at the Millennium Stadium, thanks to two goals from Drogba. In the UEFA Champions League, Chelsea reached the semi-finals but were eliminated by Liverpool on penalties.
The 2007-08 season began with José Mourinho at the helm, but he was replaced by Avram Grant in September 2007. Chelsea finished as Premier League runners-up for the second consecutive season, accumulating 85 points. The club reached their first-ever UEFA Champions League final, where they ultimately lost to Manchester United 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in Moscow. They also reached the League Cup final, losing 2-1 after extra time to Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley Stadium, and exited the FA Cup in the sixth round after a 1-0 defeat to Barnsley.

During these seasons, Chelsea boasted a formidable squad featuring several world-class talents. Didier Drogba was a prolific striker, scoring 33 goals across all competitions in 2006-07 and netting crucial goals in both cup finals. Midfield maestro Frank Lampard was a consistent goalscorer and creator, contributing 11 league goals in 2006-07 and 20 goals across all competitions in 2007-08. The defensive solidity was anchored by captain John Terry and goalkeeper Petr Čech, while Michael Ballack and Michael Essien provided strength and creativity in midfield.
