Season Overview
The 2001-02 season was a historic one for Club América, as they competed in the Mexican Primera División, which was divided into the Invierno 2001 and Verano 2002 tournaments. Under the management of Manuel Lapuente, who took over in September 2001, América achieved their ninth league championship by winning the Torneo Verano 2002. In the Verano 2002 regular season, the team finished eighth with 27 points, securing 7 wins, 6 draws, and 5 losses. Their triumphant campaign culminated in a 3-2 aggregate victory over Necaxa in the Verano 2002 final, with Hugo Norberto Castillo scoring a golden goal in extra time to seal the title and end a 13-year trophy drought. This championship also qualified them for the CONCACAF Champions' Cup 2003. Earlier in the season, in August 2001, Club América also won the CONCACAF Giants Cup, defeating MLS club D.C. United 2-0.
