Season Overview
Under manager Terry Venables, this period was defined by England hosting and reaching the semi-finals of Euro 1996, famously losing to Germany on penalties. The team played a series of friendlies and the Umbro Cup in 1995 as preparation, as they had automatically qualified for the tournament as hosts. Following the tournament, Venables resigned and was replaced by Glenn Hoddle who began the successful qualification campaign for the 1998 World Cup.
Key Players
The squad for Euro '96 featured a blend of experience and emerging talent. Key figures included tournament top scorer Alan Shearer, the creative force of Paul Gascoigne, and the leadership of Tony Adams and Stuart Pearce. The team also included players like David Seaman in goal, Teddy Sheringham, and a young Gareth Southgate.
