Season Overview
The England national team, managed by Sven-Göran Eriksson, competed in two major tournaments during the 2002-04 period. In the 2002 FIFA World Cup, England reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated. Two years later, the team qualified for UEFA Euro 2004, where they again reached the quarter-final stage, ultimately losing on penalties to the host nation, Portugal. During this time, with Wembley Stadium undergoing reconstruction, England played their home matches at various venues across the country.
Key Players
This era featured a host of iconic English talent, including captain David Beckham, prolific striker Michael Owen, and midfield stalwarts Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard, and Frank Lampard. Young forward Wayne Rooney also made a significant impact during Euro 2004.
