England failed to qualify for UEFA Euro 2008, with manager Steve McClaren sacked in November 2007 after a decisive loss to Croatia. Fabio Capello was appointed manager in December 2007, and under his leadership, England successfully qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Qualification for the World Cup was secured in September 2009.

Key Players

During this period, key players for England included Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, and Rio Ferdinand. Wayne Rooney was a top scorer in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign. John Terry also served as captain for much of Fabio Capello's tenure.
