Season Overview
The 2002-04 period was one of dramatic contrasts for France. As reigning world champions, they entered the 2002 World Cup under manager Roger Lemerre but suffered a shocking group stage exit, finishing bottom of their group without scoring a single goal. Following this, Jacques Santini took over and guided the team through a flawless Euro 2004 qualification campaign. At the Euro 2004 finals, they topped their group but were surprisingly eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual champions Greece.
Key Players
This era featured a golden generation of French talent, many of whom had won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000. The squad was built around superstars like Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, and Patrick Vieira. The formidable defence was marshalled by veterans Marcel Desailly and Lilian Thuram, while the attack also boasted the talents of David Trezeguet and Sylvain Wiltord.
