Season Overview
The 1997-98 season saw Rangers, managed by Walter Smith, finish second in the Scottish Premier Division, just two points behind Celtic, ending their run of nine consecutive titles. They also reached the Scottish Cup final but were defeated 2-1 by Hearts, concluding the season trophyless for the first time in twelve years. In the 1998-99 season, under new manager Dick Advocaat, the club achieved a domestic treble, winning the inaugural Scottish Premier League, the Scottish Cup, and the League Cup.
Key Players
During the 1997-99 period, the squad underwent significant changes. The 1997-98 season featured players like Marco Negri, who was the league's top scorer with 32 goals, alongside club stalwarts like Richard Gough and Ally McCoist in his final season. The successful 1998-99 treble-winning side, built by Dick Advocaat, included new signings such as Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Arthur Numan, and Rod Wallace, who finished as top scorer with 27 goals.
