Season Overview
This period covered two distinct qualification campaigns under two different managers. Brian Kerr's tenure concluded in late 2005 after the team narrowly missed out on a play-off spot for the 2006 World Cup, finishing fourth in their group. Steve Staunton took charge for the UEFA Euro 2008 qualifiers, a campaign which began in 2006 and saw the team ultimately fail to qualify for the tournament.
Key Players
Throughout this era, the squad was built around a core of established Premier League talent. Goalkeeper Shay Given provided a constant presence, while the attack was led by the nation's all-time leading goalscorer, Robbie Keane. Other mainstays of the team included Damien Duff, Kevin Kilbane, John O'Shea, and Richard Dunne.
