Season Overview
Under manager Nicanor de Carvalho in 1997, Kashiwa Reysol finished 7th overall in the J.League and reached the quarterfinals of both the Emperor's Cup and the J.League Cup. The following year, with Akira Nishino taking over as manager, the team finished 8th in the league and were knocked out in the fourth round of the Emperor's Cup. The 1998 season also saw them fail to advance from the group stage of the J.League Cup.
Key Players
The 1997 season was lit up by Brazilian forward Edílson, who was the team's top goalscorer with 23 goals. In the summer of 1998, the squad was famously bolstered by the arrival of Bulgarian legend and former Ballon d'Or winner Hristo Stoichkov. Other key players across this two-year period included Brazilian forward Bentinho and defender Kentaro Ishikawa.
