Season Overview
Under manager Gérard Houllier, this period saw mixed fortunes for Liverpool. In the 2002-03 season, they secured their seventh League Cup with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United but finished a disappointing 5th in the Premier League, missing out on Champions League qualification. The following 2003-04 season, which was Houllier's last, saw the team secure a 4th place finish to return to Europe's top competition.
Key Players
This era was defined by the formidable presence of local heroes Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, alongside the prolific goalscorer Michael Owen, who was the club's top scorer in both campaigns. The squad also featured key defensive players like Sami Hyypiä and John Arne Riise, with Dietmar Hamann anchoring the midfield and Emile Heskey providing a powerful attacking option.
