Season Overview
The 1990s were a challenging period for the Peru national football team, as they sought to regain their prominence on the international stage. Peru did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup in 1990, 1994, or 1998, with their 1990 qualification campaign seeing them lose all their matches. In the 1998 World Cup qualifiers, Peru finished fifth in the CONMEBOL group, narrowly missing out on qualification. In the Copa América, Peru participated throughout the decade, notably reaching the semi-finals and finishing fourth in the 1997 tournament.
Key Players
During the 1990s, several notable players represented Peru. Roberto Palacios was a prominent figure, making his debut in 1992 and going on to earn 128 caps for the national team. Jorge Soto also emerged as a key player, featuring for Peru from 1992. Defenders like Juan Reynoso were integral to the squad, participating in tournaments such as the 1993 Copa América. Midfielder José del Solar contributed with goals during World Cup qualifiers and was part of the 1993 Copa América team. Forward Flavio Maestri also made an impact, scoring in the 1991 Copa América.
