Season Overview
The Republic of Ireland competed in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification under manager Mick McCarthy. They finished second in UEFA Group 2, unbeaten but behind Portugal on goal difference, and subsequently won a two-legged play-off against Iran to qualify for the World Cup finals. At the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Ireland reached the Round of 16, where they were eliminated by Spain on penalties after a 1-1 draw.
