Season Overview
Under manager Mick McCarthy, the Republic of Ireland famously reached the knockout stages of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, ultimately losing to Spain on penalties in the Round of 16. Following the World Cup, the team began their UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying campaign, finishing third in Group 10. Brian Kerr took over as manager in early 2003 for the bulk of the qualification matches.
