Season Overview
Under manager Mick McCarthy, the Republic of Ireland qualified for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Despite the pre-tournament controversy that saw captain Roy Keane sent home, the team performed admirably, drawing with Cameroon and Germany before a 3-0 victory over Saudi Arabia secured their passage from the group stage. Their journey ended in the Round of 16 after a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Spain, ultimately losing 3-2 in a penalty shootout.
Key Players
The 2002 squad was filled with talent from the English top flight. Key figures included goalkeeper Shay Given, defenders Steve Staunton and Ian Harte, and midfielders Matt Holland and Damien Duff. Forwards Robbie Keane, who scored a dramatic late equaliser against Germany, and Niall Quinn led the line for the Boys in Green.
