Under the management of Craig Brown, Scotland successfully qualified for the 1996 European Championship in England. They were drawn in a tough group with the Netherlands, hosts England, and Switzerland. Despite holding the Netherlands to a 0-0 draw and beating Switzerland 1-0, they were narrowly eliminated on goals scored after a 2-0 loss to England at Wembley.
