Season Overview
Turkey finished second in their UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying group, failing to qualify for the tournament. For the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, they finished second in Group 2 behind Ukraine. Turkey then lost to Switzerland on away goals in the play-offs, thus not qualifying for the 2006 World Cup. Ersun Yanal managed the team from April 2004 to June 2005, before Fatih Terim took over in 2005.

Emre Belözoğlu was a central figure in midfield, while Tuncay Şanlı contributed crucial goals, including a hat-trick in the World Cup play-offs.
