The Liverpool FC 2002-04 season was a mixed one for the club. The team was managed by Gerard Houllier, who had been in charge since 1998, and was looking to build on the success of the previous season, where they had finished second in the Premier League and won the League Cup.
The season began positively for Liverpool, as they won their first three Premier League games, but then went on a run of five games without a win, including defeats to Arsenal and Manchester United. They eventually finished the season in fourth place, 15 points behind champions Arsenal.
In the domestic cup competitions, Liverpool reached the quarter-finals of the League Cup, but were knocked out by Bolton Wanderers. In the FA Cup, they made it to the final, where they faced Arsenal. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, with Michael Owen scoring for Liverpool, but Arsenal won the replay 2-1 to deny Liverpool a trophy.
In Europe, Liverpool had a successful run in the UEFA Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals, but were knocked out by Marseille. They also competed in the Champions League, but failed to progress past the group stage, finishing third behind Valencia and Spartak Moscow.
Off the field, the club faced financial difficulties, with debts of over £80 million. This led to the sale of key players such as Nicolas Anelka and Michael Owen, who left the club in 2004.
Overall, the Liverpool FC 2002-04 season was a disappointing one for the club, as they failed to win any major trophies and struggled to compete with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League. However, they showed promise in the cup competitions and in Europe, and would go on to win the Champions League under new manager Rafael Benitez in 2005.
