Season Overview

The 1996-97 period was a memorable one for the Bolivia national team. They were deep into their 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign, competing against the best teams in South America. The absolute highlight of this era was hosting the 1997 Copa América. Bolivia put on a fantastic tournament, going all the way to the final where they were runners-up to a strong Brazil side, a historic achievement for the nation.

Managed by Antonio López Habas, the squad was built around a golden generation of Bolivian talent. Key figures included the iconic playmaker Marco "El Diablo" Etcheverry, creative midfielder Erwin "Platini" Sánchez, and forward Jaime Moreno. The team also relied on the experience of players like goalkeeper Carlos Trucco, Julio César Baldivieso, and defender Marco Sandy.
