Season Overview

Under manager Javier Clemente, who was appointed in 1992, Spain successfully qualified for the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA. At the tournament, they progressed from the group stage and defeated Switzerland 3-0 in the round of 16, before being eliminated by Italy in a controversial 2-1 defeat in the quarter-finals. This period also saw the Spanish Olympic team, managed by Vicente Miera, win the gold medal on home soil at the Barcelona '92 Games.
