Under the management of Roger Lemerre, this period was a tale of two halves for the French national team. They entered this era as reigning world champions and spectacularly won the UEFA European Championship in 2000, defeating Italy in the final with a golden goal. However, their 2002 World Cup campaign was a shocking contrast, as the defending champions were eliminated in the group stage without scoring a single goal.

This golden generation featured a wealth of talent, led by the legendary Zinedine Zidane. The squad included iconic figures such as Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Marcel Desailly, and Lilian Thuram. Key contributors to the Euro 2000 victory included Sylvain Wiltord and David Trezeguet, who scored crucial late goals in the final.
