Season Overview

As reigning world and European champions, France entered the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea with enormous expectations. Managed by Roger Lemerre, the team suffered a shocking 1-0 defeat to debutants Senegal in the tournament's opening match. A subsequent 0-0 draw with Uruguay and a 2-0 loss to Denmark saw the holders eliminated, finishing bottom of their group without scoring a single goal.

Key Players

The hugely talented squad included many of the stars from their 1998 and 2000 triumphs. Key figures were Zinedine Zidane, who missed the first two matches through injury, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Marcel Desailly, and Lilian Thuram. The forward line also boasted David Trezeguet and Djibril Cissé, who were the top scorers in the Italian and French leagues respectively that season.
