Season Overview
As co-hosts of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Japan made history on home soil under the guidance of French manager Philippe Troussier. For the first time ever, the Samurai Blue advanced from the group stage, finishing top of Group H ahead of Belgium, Russia, and Tunisia. Their impressive run came to an end in the Round of 16 with a narrow 1-0 loss to eventual third-place finishers, Turkey.
Key Players
The squad was built around a core of talent playing in Europe, led by Parma's creative midfielder Hidetoshi Nakata and Feyenoord's Shinji Ono. Arsenal's Junichi Inamoto was a standout performer, scoring in crucial group stage matches against Belgium and Russia. The team also featured veterans like Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi in goal and captain Ryuzo Morioka in defence.
