Season Overview

The 2011-12 season saw Manchester United, under manager Sir Alex Ferguson, mount a strong challenge for the Premier League title, ultimately finishing second on goal difference to local rivals Manchester City. The team began the campaign by winning the FA Community Shield. In European competition, United exited the UEFA Champions League at the group stage, subsequently competing in the UEFA Europa League where they reached the Round of 16. Domestically, they were knocked out in the Fourth Round of the FA Cup and the Fifth Round of the League Cup.
