Season Overview

The 1988-89 season saw Newcastle United compete in the Football League First Division, where they ultimately faced relegation, finishing at the bottom of the table. Willie McFaul was replaced by Jim Smith as manager during the campaign. In the subsequent 1989-90 season, under manager Jim Smith, the club played in the Football League Second Division, finishing third and securing a place in the promotion play-offs, where they were defeated by local rivals Sunderland in the semi-finals.

Key Players

Notable players during this period included striker Micky Quinn, who joined for the 1989-90 season, and Brazilian forward Mirandinha, a key figure in the 1988-89 squad. They were joined by the experienced Roy Aitken, who arrived in the 1989-90 season and became captain, alongside midfielder Kevin Brock and John Hendrie.
