Season Overview
During the 2002-04 period, South Africa competed in two major tournaments. At the 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan, under coach Jomo Sono, they were eliminated in the group stage after finishing third with a memorable 3-2 defeat to Spain. The team was then managed by Ephraim Mashaba before April Phumo took charge for the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, where they were again knocked out in the group stage.

Key figures included Leeds United captain Lucas Radebe, Manchester United's Quinton Fortune, and prolific striker Benni McCarthy.
