Managed by Carlos Alberto Parreira, this period was monumental for South African football as the nation hosted the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In the 2009 tournament, Bafana Bafana reached the semi-finals, narrowly losing to Brazil before Spain defeated them in the third-place playoff. During the 2010 World Cup, they became the first host nation to be eliminated in the group stage, despite a memorable 2-1 victory against France in their final match.
Key Players
The squad was built around a core of experienced leaders and exciting talents. Captain Aaron Mokoena anchored the defence, while Everton's Steven Pienaar was the creative force in midfield. Siphiwe Tshabalala became a global star after scoring the opening goal of the 2010 World Cup, and Katlego Mphela led the line as the team's primary striker.
