América de Cali began 1997 ranked as the second-best team in the world by the IFFHS. They went on to secure their ninth Colombian league title in December 1997, concluding a historic 16-month championship season. In 1998, the club participated in the Copa Libertadores. The 1999 season saw América de Cali reach the final of the Copa Merconorte, showcasing a powerful offensive performance throughout the tournament. They ultimately finished as runners-up in the Copa Merconorte after a hard-fought campaign.

During this era, the team was managed by figures such as Luis Augusto "El Chiqui" García, who guided them to the 1997 championship, and later by Diego Umaña and Jaime de la Pava.
