The 2016-17 season saw Belgium compete in UEFA Euro 2016, where they reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated. Following the tournament, Roberto Martínez took over as manager in August 2016. The team then began their qualification campaign for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, winning five matches and securing a draw against Greece to maintain an unbeaten record during this period.
