Season Overview
The 2002-03 season was a memorable one for CA Independiente, as they clinched the Torneo Apertura 2002 title, marking their 16th league championship. Under the management of Américo Gallego, who led the team from April 2002 to May 2003, Independiente finished the Apertura with 43 points, three points ahead of Boca Juniors. However, their performance in the subsequent Torneo Clausura 2003 saw a significant drop, with the team finishing in a disappointing 20th position. Independiente also participated in the Copa Sudamericana 2002 and the Copa Libertadores 2003, where they were eliminated in the group stage of the latter competition.
Key Players
The championship-winning squad featured several key talents, including captain and defender Gabriel Milito. Prolific striker Andrés Silvera and creative midfielder Federico Insúa were instrumental in their Apertura success. Other notable players who contributed to the team during this period included goalkeeper Leonardo Díaz, Daniel Montenegro, and Lucas Pusineri.
