Season Overview
The 2008-09 season was a challenging period for the French national team. They had a disappointing UEFA Euro 2008 campaign, finishing bottom of their group after a draw with Romania and losses to the Netherlands and Italy. Following the tournament, France began their qualification journey for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The start of their qualification in late 2008 included a surprising 3-1 loss to Austria and a 2-2 draw with Romania. They would go on to finish second in their qualifying group, setting up a controversial play-off match to secure their spot in the World Cup.
Key Players
Under the management of Raymond Domenech, the squad was a mix of established veterans and emerging talent. Key figures during this period included Thierry Henry, Franck Ribéry, Karim Benzema, and Patrick Vieira. Nicolas Anelka featured regularly, earning his place back in the national team setup for Euro 2008.
