Season Overview

The Republic of Ireland competed in the 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifiers under manager Mick McCarthy. They finished second in UEFA Group 2, level on points with Portugal but behind on goal difference, remaining unbeaten in the group. Ireland subsequently secured qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup by winning a two-legged intercontinental play-off against Iran 2-1 on aggregate.

Key Players

Manager Mick McCarthy guided a squad featuring influential figures such as captain Roy Keane, Damien Duff, and Shay Given. Striker Robbie Keane was a vital attacking force for the team and often wore the number 10 shirt. Other key contributors included Ian Harte, Steve Staunton, and Gary Breen.
