They finished second in UEFA Group 2, level on points with Portugal but behind on goal difference, remaining unbeaten in the group. Ireland subsequently secured qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup by winning a two-legged intercontinental play-off against Iran 2-1 on aggregate.
