Season Overview
The 2002-2003 season was a significant period for the Republic of Ireland national team, highlighted by their participation in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the last 16. Mick McCarthy managed the team through the World Cup and into the early stages of the UEFA Euro 2004 qualifying campaign. He resigned in November 2002 following a challenging start to the qualifiers, with Don Givens briefly taking interim charge before Brian Kerr was appointed manager in January 2003.
Key Players
The squad featured prominent players such as goalkeeper Shay Given, influential defender Steve Staunton, dynamic midfielder Damien Duff, and prolific forward Robbie Keane. Midfielder Matt Holland also played a key role during this era. Roy Keane was a significant figure associated with the national team during this time, having been part of the initial 2002 World Cup squad.
