Season Overview
The 2015 and 2016 seasons were significant for Seattle Sounders FC in Major League Soccer. In 2015, under coach Sigi Schmid, the Sounders finished 4th in the Western Conference and reached the Conference Semifinals of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The 2016 season saw a dramatic turnaround; after Schmid's departure in July, Brian Schmetzer took over, initially as interim head coach. Under Schmetzer's leadership, the team surged from 9th in the Western Conference to win their first MLS Cup, defeating Toronto FC in the final.
Key Players
Notable players during these seasons included prolific forwards Clint Dempsey and Obafemi Martins, before Martins' departure in early 2016. Midfield general Osvaldo Alonso was a consistent presence, while goalkeeper Stefan Frei provided a strong foundation. The 2016 season also saw the arrival of impactful midfielder Nicolás Lodeiro and homegrown talent Jordan Morris, who were crucial to the team's MLS Cup triumph.
