Season Overview
As hosts of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, South Africa played under immense pressure and national pride. Managed by former World Cup winner Carlos Alberto Parreira, Bafana Bafana drew their opening match 1-1 with Mexico, lost to Uruguay, and secured a famous 2-1 victory against France in their final group game. Despite their efforts and finishing level on points with Mexico, they were eliminated on goal difference, becoming the first host nation to exit at the group stage.
Key Players
The squad was captained by Portsmouth defender Aaron Mokoena, who earned his 100th cap just before the tournament. Key creative influence came from Everton's Steven Pienaar, while Kaizer Chiefs star Siphiwe Tshabalala scored the tournament's iconic opening goal. Katlego Mphela was a primary goal threat up front.
