Season Overview
England reached the quarter-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by Portugal after a penalty shootout. Following the World Cup, Steve McClaren took over as manager. Under McClaren, England failed to qualify for UEFA Euro 2008, finishing fourth in their qualifying group after a decisive 3-2 home defeat to Croatia.
Key Players
The squad during this period featured prominent players such as captain David Beckham, midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard, and forwards Wayne Rooney and Peter Crouch. Defenders John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, and Ashley Cole were also integral members of the team.
