Season Overview
The year 2000 was a heartbreaking one for Italy, ending in a dramatic UEFA European Championship final. The Azzurri progressed through their group with victories over Turkey and co-hosts Belgium. After beating Romania in the quarter-final, they faced the other co-hosts, the Netherlands, in a memorable semi-final which they won on penalties after a 0-0 draw. In the final against France, Italy led 1-0 until the final minute of injury time, when France equalised and subsequently won the match with a golden goal in extra time.
Key Players
Managed by Dino Zoff, the squad was built on a formidable defence featuring Paolo Maldini, Fabio Cannavaro, and Alessandro Nesta. Goalkeeper Francesco Toldo was a hero of the semi-final, while the attack was led by talents such as Francesco Totti, Filippo Inzaghi, and Alessandro Del Piero.
