The 2001-02 season was a resounding success for Ajax, as they secured a domestic double. After a challenging start which led to the departure of manager Co Adriaanse, his replacement Ronald Koeman guided the team to a first-place finish in the Eredivisie and victory in the KNVB Cup final against Utrecht.

A young Zlatan Ibrahimović made his debut this season, joining a squad that included Rafael van der Vaart, Cristian Chivu, and Andy van der Meyde. The team also featured André Bergdølmo, Tomáš Galásek, and Hatem Trabelsi.
