Season Overview
The 2008-09 season saw Aston Villa mount a serious challenge for a top-four position in the Premier League. The club ultimately finished in 6th place for the second consecutive season, securing qualification for the following season's Europa League. In Europe, the club qualified for the UEFA Cup via the Intertoto Cup and reached the Round of 32, where they were eliminated by CSKA Moscow. The domestic cup runs ended in the Fifth Round of the FA Cup and the Third Round of the League Cup.
Key Players
Under the management of Martin O'Neill, this was his third season in charge of the club. The goalkeeping duties were shared by new American signings Brad Friedel and Brad Guzan. The squad also featured key figures such as Gareth Barry, Ashley Young, Stiliyan Petrov, Gabriel Agbonlahor and John Carew.
