Season Overview
The 2011-12 season was a challenging one for Aston Villa, who finished 16th in the Premier League, just two points clear of relegation. The club recorded its lowest points total in the Premier League era with 38 points from 38 games. In the domestic cups, Villa were knocked out in the third round of the League Cup by Bolton Wanderers and exited the FA Cup in the fourth round after a 3-2 defeat to Arsenal.

Alex McLeish managed the side during this campaign. Key players in the squad included goalkeeper Shay Given, defenders Richard Dunne and James Collins, and club captain Stiliyan Petrov. Striker Darren Bent finished the season as the team's top goalscorer with nine league goals.
