Season Overview
In the 1996-97 season, Celtic competed in the Scottish Premier Division, finishing in 2nd place. The club was managed by Tommy Burns for most of the season, with Billy Stark taking over as caretaker manager in May 1997. In cup competitions, Celtic reached the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup and the quarter-finals of the Scottish League Cup. They were eliminated in the First Round of the UEFA Cup by Hamburger SV.
Key Players
Key players for Celtic during this period included Paul McStay, a long-serving midfielder, and prolific forwards such as Jorge Cadete and Pierre Van Hooijdonk. The team's shirts prominently featured CR Smith as the main sponsor for the season.
