Season Overview
The 2001-02 season was a historic one for Club América, culminating in their first league championship in 13 years. Under manager Manuel Lapuente, who took over early in the Invierno 2001 tournament, the team built momentum that carried them to the Verano 2002 final. They faced Necaxa in a dramatic final, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit to win 3-2 on aggregate with a golden goal in extra time, securing the club's ninth league title.
Key Players
The championship-winning squad was filled with memorable talent. Chilean striker Iván Zamorano was a key figure, scoring one of the crucial goals in the final. The team also featured goalkeeper Adolfo Ríos, defenders Duilio Davino and Ricardo Rojas, and forwards Christian Patiño and Hugo Norberto Castillo, who scored the title-clinching golden goal.
