Season Overview

Managed by Roger Lemerre, France entered the 2002 FIFA World Cup as reigning champions and favourites to win. However, the tournament was a disaster for Les Bleus, who were eliminated in the group stage without scoring a single goal, the worst-ever performance by a defending champion. They finished bottom of their group after a 1-0 loss to Senegal, a 0-0 draw with Uruguay, and a 2-0 defeat to Denmark.

The star-studded squad included world-class talent from across Europe's top leagues. Key figures were Zinedine Zidane (who was unfortunately injured for the first two matches), Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and captain Marcel Desailly. The team also featured David Trezeguet, Lilian Thuram, and Fabien Barthez.
